My heart, it beats, beats for only you...
Hey readers!
What a nice long weekend it was. BC had Monday off of classes for fall break, which meant a 7 hour drive to NJ was definitely in the plans. Needless to say I had a great weekend which included two family parties, and my first trip to Atlantic City! Boy was I overwhelmed. So many lights and machines, but I had such a good time.
Time for a song!
My Heart, Paramore
At last! A song I am more than in love with and beyond excited to discuss. Needless to say, I have had a girl crush on lead singer Hayley Williams since their first album All We Know came out in 2005. Paramore has released two more full albums after that, Riot which came out in 2007 followed by brand new eyes in 2009.
The one and only complaint I have about this band, which is my favorite band, is that Hayley's voice is so big, and so explosive, that it's hard to notice anything but she and her fire-y red hair. That isn't to knock the obvious talent of drummer Zac Farro, bassist Jeremy Davis, or guitarist Taylor York. The band as a whole has a quick and witty sound to it, almost an upbeat melody to even their slowest songs. Paramore has an overall variety that is a crowd pleaser for sure.
This song begins with, in my opinion, heart melting lyrics:
"I am finding out that maybe I was wrong
That I've fallen down and I can't do this alone
Stay with me, this is what I need, please?"
Not typical lyrics for a band with such a rough sound. Although the lyrics are soft, the mix of guitar and drums along with the overall tempo, keeps this a fast moving, but lyrically gentle tune. I think it's pretty deep when someone adds the word "please" to a song. It makes the preceding words seem so much more vital and dire.
"Sing us a song and we'll sing it back to you
We could sing our own
But what would it be without you?"
The chorus is short, simple, and not repetitive. My favorite part is that the other two band members join in for the chorus giving it a truly wholesome sound. The words themselves make it sound as though without this person, it's like a day without sun, rain without an umbrella, peanut butter and no jelly, mice without cheese, etc. It's like there is something missing, and I feel that the length of the chorus is metaphorical for that missing piece, person, cheese, etc. The second verse, is just as sweet and emotional as the first.
"I am nothing now and it's been so long
Since I've heard the sound, the sound of my only hope
This time I will be listening"
I enjoy how short the verses and the choruses are, in comparison to other alternative bands. Combining the message of both verses and the chorus, it sounds to me like somebody lost someone important. It's been so long since she has heard her only hope? That sounds like it sucks to me. I guess the positive thing, is that she is still waiting for whatever it is she lost, she still believes that it's going to come back... I guess that could be a negative and pathetic thing too. Anyways...
The song ends, repetitively unfortunately:
"This heart, it beats, beats for only you
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is your's
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is your's
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is your's
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart, my heart is your's
My heart is your's
My heart is your's"
I LOVE THIS PART OF THE SONG! First off, the double bass that kicks in around the seventh line, is awesome! It makes these last lines so much more powerful, and well, awesome. These lines are pretty straight foward for the most part. Whoever that lucky guy/thing is, Hayley's heart belongs to him/it, and only him/it. Man do I hate the repetitive stuff, though.
Overall, Paramore kills it in this song. It puts a whole new feel and look to a song for the broken-hearted. I wish I could explain to you why I love this song so much, but for once, I don't know what to say.
Until next week my beloved audience, keep jammin'.

I'm more than just an option...
Hey readers!
What a crazy week it's been! Between turning 21 and homecoming, I've had about all the celebrating I can take. My closest friends and I took a trip to enjoy the smooth sugary (expensive) drinks at Applebees for the big day, then ventured back to good old BC for some duckhunting. As for homecoming, the events didn't go as they should have unfortunately. Thanks to the eagle eyes of some suspicious students, a scam was discovered the night before the end of the duckhunting competition. Unfortunately, this information wasn't spread to those in charge, and nothing was done. In spite of all that, I'm happy to report that I walked in my first homecoming parade ever, and it was awesome! All in all, it was a memorable homecoming, even if I can only remember half of it.
Enough about me, time fore a song!
Find Your Love, Drake
Oh man. This is a good one, not so much the song, but the artist. Does anyone remember when rapper Drake was the hot and musically talented Jimmy Brooks, the crazy Ashley's boyfriend on Degrassi? Not gonna lie, I for sure had a crush on him for a while there.
I'm not even going to pretend to know what this song means, except maybe that he's lost somebodies lovin' and he really, really, really wants to find it. Just kidding.
For real though, after his big role on Degrassi, Aubrey Drake Graham signed a record deal in 2009 with Young Money Entertainment, ran by Weezy himself. His first album was released in June of 2010, Thank Me Later, and his new found talent proved to be a success as this album was ranked number one on the Billboard Top 200. The great thing about Drake, not to be confused with a male duck, is that he raps and sings, and is surprisingly good at both. Some people joke and say he needs to chose a skill and stick with it, I however find it refreshing that I'm actually listening to someone talented. (As opposed to an immature teen squeaking about how she doesn't know which seat to take, when state laws clearly say children under 14 must reside in the back seat). By the way, it's Wednesday.
The song starts out with a loud, bumping techno beat, with bass that seems maxed out. Bongos come to mind, even though you are positive that is not what the sound is. It's quick, and yet the background sounds slow the song down, settling you into the first verse nicely.
"I'm more than just an option, hey, hey, hey
Refuse to be forgotten, hey, hey, hey
I took a chance with my heart, hey, hey, hey
And I feel it takin' over"
I love the first line, and that's about it. Just kidding, the song is ridiculously repetitive, however, I will try to be as open minded as possible, hey, hey, hey. Anyways, about that first line. The use of it could go horribly. Don a squeaky voice you may hear a nerd use: "I'm more than just an option? Hey, hey, hey!"
No.
Drake just lays it all out there, no questions asked. "I'M more than just an option." Makes you wanna shrink back and shake your head incessantly. "Refuse to be forgotten." Period at the end signifies no question about it, you WILL remember me for the rest of your life, (the word "creep" comes to mind). The last two lines is where Drake turns into a pansy, you just don't admit stuff like that man.
First of all, everything involving your heart is a chance, a risk. Also, that awesome thing we have called a heart, is selfish, stubborn, and really freaking greedy. When it decides it wants something, of course it's going to take over. Thank-you Dr. Drake for schooling me in stuff I already knew.
On to my favorite part of the song, the chorus. (NOT)
"I better find your lovin', I better find your heart
I better find your lovin', I better find your heart
I better find your lovin', I better find your heart
I bet if I give all my lovin', nothin's gonna tear us apart"
Why did I even bothering typing in the two middle lines? Talk about a waste of finger-ly effort. I wish there was more I could say about this chorus, but well, Drake says it all. Four freaking times. What happened to lyrical creativity? Drake is normally pretty good in that aspect but man, that shot to the spine must have really messed up his creative side (not being rude here, Degrassi reference). Anyways, all you need to know is that he better find your lovin' and your heart, or else... I'm not sure what he'll do, however after the lack of imagination in these lyrics I'd be afraid to find out.
"I'm than just a number, hey, hey, hey
I doubt you'll find another, hey, hey, hey
So every single summer, hey, hey, hey
I be the one that you remember"
He really wants you to remember him, hey hey hey. Please tell me what's with the hey's? The beat of the song isn't lacking in any way, so why not just leave the spot blank, instead of repeating something unnecessary other than the chorus? And Drake, I know I won't find another man who starts a band with the incredibly hot but always unavailable Craig, gets shot and ends up in a wheelchair, befriended the person who shot him, and someone who changes girlfriends more than I change nail polish (a lot). Holy run on sentence batman, but you get my point. I feel as though Dr. Drake should skip acting, singing, and rapping all together and just go be a college professor for people who love being told things they were already 100% sure of.
With that being said, I'd like to conclude on this:
Man was I harsh. Anyways:
The word "hey" appears 27 times in this song.
The phrases: "I better find your lovin', I better find your heart," appear 11 times each.
Thank-you I now have a headache.
Till next week, keep jammin'.

It's like you wanted to go, and give yourself away...
Hello again!
So sorry for the missing post last week, as a college senior, things seem to be getting busier and busier by the moment.
As for this week, I have plenty to do between duck hunting (will explain), my birthday (I will finally be 21!), and of course the ever-present homecoming.
Duck hunting is a new tradition here on Bethany Campus, where during the week of homecoming, students involved in the Student Activities Council hide little rubber duckies everywhere on campus (and I mean everywhere). These ducks have point values assigned to each of them and an organization (sorority, fraternity, club, etc) can turn them in with the hopes of being the one with the most at the end of the week. Despite several difficulties regarding the rules of this competition, it is an overall exciting and fun event that the whole student body enjoys taking part in.
Enough of current events, time for a song!
For anyone who was wondering, the way I chose the weekly song is I select the iTunes DJ feature on my iTunes, and the first song that comes up is the one I will discuss. Also, as an added feature for future posts, I will attach a link for the lyrics so readers can have a chance to check out the full song and not just the sections I mention.
The song of this week: Heaven Forbid, The Fray
The Fray is for certain an interesting band when it comes to lyrics as well as their overall style. Similar to them are artists like Lifehouse and Goo Goo Dolls. The Fray is made of: Isaac Slade- Vocals and Piano, Joe King- Guitar and Vocals, Dave Welsh- Guitar, and Ben Wysocki- Drums. The Fray stems from Denver, Colorado and boasts a "rock type feel, with a little bit of pop thrown in."
The nice thing about listening to the Fray is the abundance of piano. This classical "instrument" if you will is typically a starting, solo, or ending point for most pop songs. However, The Fray makes it a prominent sound, giving their songs a homey, classical and mostly upbeat feel, in my opinion.
The intro to this song is a nice mix of piano as well as guitar for about 20 seconds. The coolest part of this song is that the beginning line starts with "20 years" at exactly the 20 second mark. How freaking cool! I'm a music nerd, please don't ridicule me.
Anyways, throughout this song it is unclear just who Joe and Isaac are singing to, although, they make it very clear that whoever it is, made a big boo-boo.
"Twenty years, it's breaking you down
Now that you understand, there's no one around
Take a breath, just take a seat
You're falling apart and tearing at the seams"
Poor kid. The great thing about this song is that it truly could relate to anyone who is experiencing any kind of bump in the road (hint, hint college kids). Whether it be college, relationships, money, mid-life crisis, bad hair day, chipping nail polish, etc. Isaac assures you (even though he has no clue who you are) that you are going to be alright.
"Heaven forbid you end up alone
You don't know why
Hold on tight, wait for tomorrow
You'll be alright"
Well hey, isn't that a nice chorus? It really does bring the true meaning of the song together. And seriously, heaven forbid, you end up alone? Yeah, heaven forbid, cause that would really suck. Have you ever taken a moment to look around you, and actually imagine your life without all the people you care about? Now we all know the people who cry and complain "I'm so alone," when in reality, they're surrounded by people who love them and would be there for them in the drop of a hat. I'm talking seriously, legitimately alone. Like 23 hour Supermax Extreme Security Prison, alone. Could you imagine? Yeah, scary thought. I can't either. Heaven forbid, for real man.
"It's on your face, is it on your mind
Would you care to build a house of your own
How much longer, how long can you wait
It's like you wanted to go and give yourself away"
Hello reference to marriage obsessed females. (Sorry for being stereotypical here, reminder: I'm a chick too!)
I'll be honest, the line regarding building a house of your own confuses me a bit. It sounds as though they're saying, "oh the sky is blue, lets move in together!" I feel as though there could be multiple interpretations for that line.
A wise WOMAN once said: "Marriage isn't about romance for women. It's a duty and always has been. A responsibility to uphold, children to produce, and a home to keep. As for men, they live their lives day to day as opposed to looking forward to a 'duty'. Men don't think about marriage as often or as in depth as women do. So when they finally find a woman they WANT to marry as opposed to HAVE TO, it is a special and endearing honor." -Leila Meachum, Author of Roses
She couldn't have said it better. So ladies, why the rush? Yeah, we have that awesome thing called a biological clock and all, but seriously, why rush into something that is so final, and so, well, serious? If you've got the rest of your life to spend with this guy, why not spend some time looking for him as well, as opposed to jumping into it thinking: "oh, he'll do"?
"I don't know how to get you out of this one
I don't know how to get you out of this one
I don't know how to get you out of this one
I don't know how to get you out of this one"
Well, me neither. At the end of this song, it sounds to me like someone rushed into something, and found themselves stuck (Uhm hello, been there before). I'm thinking the underlying meaning to this song is think before you act, like really think. I'm talking like, long walk, all-out, soul searching thinking about some of the more serious decisions in your life (aka career, marriage, kids, drugs, etc). However, if you decide to not think about it, and just plunge in, head first, no helmet kind of thing, Isaac is letting you know, hey, you'll be okay. (Just don't ask for help.)
(Just kidding)
In conclusion, this song is one of those that could really make you sad inside (if you're as OCD as I am when it comes to listening to and interpreting music). It could also go on the flip side and tell you that if you're having a difficult time, keep your head up and everything will be alright.
"Everything will be okay in the end; if it's not okay, it's not the end." -Carolyn Myers
Until next time my darling readers, keep jammin'.
